The New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) won 27 out 150 seats. The party ultimately seeks independence for Flanders the northern part of Belgium. However the Socialist party from Wallonia the Francophone southern part of Belgium got just one seat less at 26.
After the last election in 2007 squabbles between the two regions delayed formation of a new government for over six months.
Bart De Wever, the chairman of the N-VA, and other party leaders held talks with King Albert, the country's head of state, on Monday to decide who should form the next government.
